Afraid to Move to Spain Without Spanish? Read This First

One of the most common things we hear from potential language assistants is: “I’d love to apply, but I don’t speak Spanish.” And I completely understand that fear moving to another country without the language feels overwhelming. But the reality is that many assistants arrive in Spain knowing little to no Spanish and still have an amazing experience. You’re not expected to be fluent, especially in schools, where your job is to speak English and support the students. Teachers are used to this, and students often love the fact that you don’t speak Spanish at first, it pushes them to communicate with you in English.
Living day to day in Spain without Spanish is much more manageable than people imagine. Between translation apps, patient locals, and other assistants going through the same thing, you’re never as lost as you think you’ll be. In cities like Madrid, Valencia or Barcelona there’s a big international community, but even in smaller towns people really appreciate the effort when you try. You quickly learn the basics you actually need ordering food, going to the supermarket, understanding school routines and that alone gives you confidence.
What usually surprises assistants the most is how much Spanish they end up learning without trying too hard. Because you’re living it every day, the language starts to stick naturally. You have time to take classes, do language exchanges, or just learn through daily interactions, and that kind of learning feels much less stressful than studying from a textbook. Almost everyone tells us they leave Spain speaking far more Spanish than they ever expected.
Not knowing Spanish shouldn’t be the reason you don’t apply. If anything, it’s part of the experience. Feeling a bit uncomfortable at the beginning is normal, but that’s also where the growth happens. Spain is welcoming, social, and full of people who are happy to help all you need is an open mind and the willingness to try, trust us, moving to Spain will be the best experience of your life!
