Finding Quiet Corners in Madrid: El Lago

Cosy little cafe in the park

One thing that really surprised me about living in Madrid is how easy it is to slow down. It’s a big, busy city, but somehow you can still find these little pockets of calm when you need them most.

For me, one of those places is just outside the metro Lago. It literally means “lake,” and that’s exactly what it is—a simple lake with a really nice view. You’ve got greenery all around, and in the distance you can even spot the Royal Palace and La Almudena Cathedral. There are a few cafés and restaurants nearby too, so it’s the perfect place to sit down for a coffee or something to eat. You can even rent a little rowboat if you’re feeling active.

I usually go there in the morning when I need a bit of a reset. It’s way quieter than later in the day, and there’s something about the early hours that just makes everything feel calmer. There’s a cool breeze coming off the water, birds and ducks everywhere, and people just doing their own thing—running, cycling, or out on the lake. Even though there are still people around, everyone kind of keeps to themselves. It’s one of those moments where a big city doesn’t feel so overwhelming.

Breakfast is always the same for me: café con leche y hielo y una tostada con tomate. If you haven’t tried it yet, you need to. It’s super simple—bread, olive oil, tomato, and salt—but it just works. And the iced coffee situation here is something you have to experience at least once. You get your coffee in one cup and a separate glass of ice, and then it’s up to you to pour it in without spilling it everywhere. It sounds easy… it’s not (at least not the first few times).

Once you’ve got your breakfast, that’s when the real magic happens. Terrace culture in Spain is on another level. No one’s rushing you out the door—you can just sit there, take your time, and actually enjoy the moment. At Lago, it’s the perfect place to stay a bit longer, have another coffee, read something, or just chat with friends. It’s one of those simple routines that ends up being one of your favourite parts of the week.

If you’re living in Madrid (or planning to), I’d definitely recommend checking out Lago. Go early, grab a coffee and a tostada, and just take it slow for a bit. It’s a nice reminder that even in a busy city, you can always find your own little escape.
